Petroleum Asphalt Cement (CAP)

Asphalt is a high-viscosity oil byproduct, with waterproofing and adhesive properties, non-volatile in room temperature and atmospheric pressure, black or dark brown in color. The main application of CAP is in the paving industry, where it is used as a binder in the production of asphalt concrete that covers most of the highways we know.

Applications

CAP is used in the production of hot-machined bituminous concrete (CBUQ), hot premixed concrete (PMQ), hot-machined asphalt sand (AAUQ), among other types of mixtures. It is also used in the production of waterproofing products for civil construction, such as asphalt and water repellent blankets.

In addition, our asphalt cements are the major inputs used in the manufacture of polymer-modified asphalt, rubber-asphalt and industrial asphalts in general.

Currently, Petrobras makes two types of CAP available to its customers: the conventional CAP and CAP Pro.

Conventional CAP

It fully complies with the specifications of the National Petroleum Agency, being a material of excellent quality, in line with market needs. It is available in two versions, which differ mainly due to the product's penetration characteristics:

CAP 30/45

It is a more resistant material, suited for conditions of moderate to heavy traffic and/or regions with a warmer climate. Currently, CAP 30/45 is produced in the following Petrobras refineries: REGAP, REDUC and REPLAN.

CAP 50/70

Material that has a slightly higher viscosity and a lower penetration; it is used in moderate or light traffic conditions and/or cooler climate regions. Currently, CAP 50/70 is produced in the following Petrobras refineries: REGAP, REDUC, REPLAN, REVAP, REPAR and REFAP.

It is important to point out that specifications and uses may vary according to technical standards and the specific needs of each project.

CAP Pro

CAP Pro is the new family of petroleum asphalt cement of Petrobras and represents significant progress in the transition to a low-carbon and more sustainable future. These products not only fully meet ANP requirements, but also reduce the environmental impact of their applications, making an important contribution to a more promising future, both for society and the environment.

Through the CAP Pro family, Petrobras reinforces its commitment to boost the paving sector towards a more aware and responsible development.

Currently, the CAP Pro family has two product lines: CAP Pro AP and CAP Pro W.

CAP Pro AP

It is the high-penetration CAP line, ideal for RAP (Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement) recycling services in paving, with rejuvenating capacity, waiving the use of additives that perform this job.  CAP Pro AP, therefore, provides greater sustainability to the paving chain as it generates less paving waste due to reuse and, consequently, decreases the use of virgin material.

In addition, CAP Pro AP has excellent properties to be used as an input for the production of Polymer-Modified Asphalts (AMPs), Rubber Asphalts (ABs), Asphalt Emulsions (EAs) and waterproofing products, among other industrial asphalts.

Currently, CAP Pro AP is available with a penetration range of 70/85 and is produced at REVAP, with production at other refineries being studied.

Answer your questions about asphalt products

Petroleum asphalt cement (CAP) is a high-viscosity petroleum derivative with cementitious properties. It is non-volatile at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure, and is black or dark brown in color.
Petrobras' asphalt products consist of the conventional petroleum asphalt cements CAP 30/45 and CAP 50/70, and the special petroleum asphalt cements CAP Pro W and CAP Pro AP.
CAP Pro W is an asphalt cement specially formulated for application at reduced temperatures (WMA - Warm Mix Asphalt). This provides reduced energy consumption, lower carbon intensity, and better working conditions during mixing and application, among other benefits.

CAP Pro AP is a high-penetration asphalt cement, ideal for RAP (Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement) recycling services in paving. It has rejuvenating capabilities, dispensing with the need for additives that typically perform this function.
CAP Pro W should be used in asphalt concretes designed for CAP 30/45—and eventually for CAP 50/70 depending on project conditions—where the goal is to achieve better working and environmental conditions, as well as ease of application (application temperature, colder days, longer transport distances).

CAP Pro AP should be used when seeking to better meet RAP recycling demands and in cases of industrialization.

Currently, material selection processes and mix designs (balancing) allow CAP Pro W and CAP Pro AP to be used in severe traffic conditions with good results.
CAP Pro AP has been produced at REVAP since August 2023, with ANP (National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels) authorization. It can only be sold to clients who sign a consent form and subsequently report monthly on the utilization of CAP Pro AP.

CAP Pro W is also being produced at REVAP, since January 2024.

Petrobras is evaluating market acceptance of these new products and is already studying other hubs for supply, aiming to increase availability without impacting the delivery of other conventional CAPs.
CAP Pro AP has been tested with various types of polymers and has proven compatible with all of them. However, it is recommended that each distributor verify their formulations prior to use.

Compatibility is not expected to differ from other CAPs produced by Petrobras, even though this product facilitates industrialization.
The 1.0% value aligns with North American and some European specifications. Additionally, CAP Pro AP contains rejuvenating components that may have slightly higher volatility, without detriment to the product's performance.
CAP Pro W is produced with specific raw materials and process conditions that, together with lower mixing temperatures, promote greater durability for asphalt concretes regarding both cracking and rutting (trilha de roda).
No, CAP Pro W does not compete with modified asphalts, emulsions, or other products formulated by distributors. CAP Pro W is an asphalt cement specified as 30/45, specially formulated for applications at reduced temperatures (WMA - Warm Mix Asphalt).
Yes. CAP Pro W is a sustainable Scope 3 product, meaning the reduction in carbon emissions occurs across various stages of the logistics chain. Clients, asphalt plants, and other players in the logistics chain must certify their respective stages. Petrobras is mobilizing to provide information regarding its own stage.
The only difference between CAP Pro W and conventional CAP is the use of a surfactant in the production of the sustainable asphalt. Therefore, there is a cost for this chemical component, which will be passed on to the customer over time.
By reducing mixing and track application temperatures by up to 40ºC, the following benefits are obtained:

a) Reduction of up to 35% in fuel consumption used to heat the asphalt mix;
b) Reduction of fumes (volatile material that vaporizes at the time of product application), which translates into better working conditions for the road crew exposed to these vapors;
c) Improved workability, i.e., greater ease of application, allowing paving on colder days;
d) Longer transport distances for the asphalt mix (CAP + aggregate).
Yes. The use of RAP (Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement) is carried out at the asphalt plant, added to the process at a certain percentage, thus replacing parts of the virgin aggregates and asphalt. This lowers the production cost of the asphalt mix.

It is worth highlighting that the use of RAP is becoming mandatory, and CAP Pro W facilitates mixing in these cases as well, given the temperature losses when using cold recycled material.
CAP Pro W can also bring benefits to end users (drivers):

a) Reduction in travel time impacts, as the road closure time during resurfacing services is shorter, allowing for faster roadway delivery and generating fewer operational disruptions;
b) In some cases, it provides greater comfort for the user due to the increased durability of the asphalt surfacing, as defects manifest more slowly, maintaining good service conditions for longer periods.
CAP Pro R contains renewable content (a type of vegetable oil) in its formulation, allowing for a higher proportion of Pre-salt oils in its production. This results in a product with a lower carbon footprint when compared to conventional CAPs, while maintaining quality and technical specifications.
Yes, all CAP Pro R products fully meet ANP specifications, guaranteeing the same performance as conventional CAPs in all applications.
Initially, CAP Pro R products are produced at the Henrique Lage Refinery (REVAP), with potential for expansion to other refineries that produce asphalt through the deasphalting process.
CAP Pro R has the same applications as conventional CAPs: road paving, waterproofing, and industrialization of asphalt products.
CAP Pro R underwent rigorous testing in three stages: laboratory scale at CENPES, semi-commercial scale at NESIX, and practical application on experimental lanes at Ilha do Fundão (RJ), proving its durability and constructive aspects.
The process maintains the base of conventional CAPs, incorporating a renewable stream.
In addition to the direct reduction of emissions due to the renewable content (*), CAP Pro R allows for the processing of up to 100% Pre-salt oil at REVAP. These oils are naturally less emissive, resulting in a dual environmental benefit.

It is part of Petrobras' CAP Pro line of sustainable asphalt products, reinforcing our commitment to the energy transition and a low-carbon future.
CAP Pro R was rigorously tested in CENPES laboratories, where excellent properties for asphalt modification were observed, such as the production of polymer-modified asphalts and emulsions.
CAP Pro R meets the same ANP specification as conventional CAP, so it can be used as a substitute with no difference in paving works.
