Petroleum Asphalt Cement (CAP)
CAP is a high-viscosity petroleum derivative with waterproofing and adhesive properties, non-volatile at ambient temperature and atmospheric pressure, and black or dark brown in color. CAP is also known as Asphalt Binder. The main application of CAP is in the paving industry, where it is used as a binder in the production of the asphalt concrete that surfaces most of the paved highways we know.
Applications
CAP is used in the production of hot mix asphalt (HMA) and pre-mixed hot asphalt, among other types of mixtures. It is also used in the production of waterproofing materials for civil construction, such as asphalt membranes and water repellents.
Our asphalt cements are the main inputs used in the manufacture of polymer-modified asphalt, asphalt-rubber, and industrial asphalts in general.
Currently, Petrobras offers two types of CAP to its customers: conventional CAP and the CAP Pro Line.
CAP Convencional
Conventional CAP
It fully complies with the specifications of the National Agency of Petroleum, Natural Gas and Biofuels (ANP), being a high-quality material in line with market needs. It is available in two versions, which differ mainly by the product's penetration characteristic:
CAP 30/45
It is a more consistent material, suitable for moderate to heavy traffic conditions and/or warmer climate regions. Currently, CAP 30/45 is produced at the following Petrobras refineries: REGAP, REDUC, and REPLAN.
CAP 50/70
A material that has lower viscosity and higher penetration than CAP 30/45; it is applied for light or moderate traffic conditions and/or colder climate regions. Currently, CAP 50/70 is produced at the following Petrobras refineries: REGAP, REDUC, REPAR, REFAP, and LUBNOR.
It is important to highlight that specifications and uses may vary according to technical standards and the specific needs of each project.

These products not only fully meet ANP requirements, but they also reduce the environmental impact in their applications, making an important contribution to a more promising future for both society and the environment.
With the CAP Pro Line, Petrobras reinforces its commitment to driving the paving sector towards a more conscious and responsible development.
The CAP Pro Line features three products: CAP Pro 50/70 R, CAP Pro W 30/45 R, and CAP Pro AP 70/85, currently available at REVAP - Refinaria Vale do Paraíba, in São José dos Campos, SP.
CAP Pro 50/70 R
CAP Pro 50/70 R
CAP Pro 50/70 R is the newest member of the CAP Pro line of sustainable asphalt products, aligned with the transition to a low-carbon future. Rigorously tested on a laboratory scale at CENPES, on a semi-commercial scale at NESIX in São Mateus do Sul, PR, and in on-track application at Ilha do Fundão (RJ), CAP Pro 50/70 R is a Petroleum Asphalt Cement (CAP) with renewable content that combines the traditional quality of our asphalts with environmental innovation.

CAP Pro W 30/45 R
CAP Pro W 30/45 R
It is the CAP specially formulated for application at reduced temperatures (WMA - warm mix asphalt), generating energy savings during the paving process and, consequently, reducing emissions. Its formulation allows the mixing and on-track application processes to occur at temperatures up to 40°C lower than those traditionally used, without the need to alter paving equipment and processes. It is specified with all the items of the conventional CAP 30/45. CAP Pro W 30/45 R is also a Petroleum Asphalt Cement (CAP) with renewable content.

CAP Pro AP 70/85
CAP Pro AP 70/85
It is the high-penetration CAP , ideal for RAP (Reclaimed Asphalt Pavement) recycling services in paving, with rejuvenating capacity, eliminating the need for additives that perform this function. CAP Pro AP 70/85 therefore provides greater sustainability to the paving chain through lower generation of paving waste due to reuse and, consequently, a reduction in the use of virgin material.
In addition, CAP Pro AP 70/85 has excellent properties to be used as an input for the production of Polymer-Modified Asphalts (PMAs), Asphalt-Rubber (AR), Asphalt Emulsions (AEs), and waterproofing products, among other industrial asphalts.

CAP Pro AP 70/85 should be used where the goal is to better meet RAP recycling demands. Currently, material selection processes and mix designs (balancing) allow CAP Pro W 30/45 R and CAP Pro AP 70/85 to be used in severe traffic conditions with good results.
The entire CAP Pro line is being produced at REVAP (Henrique Lage Refinery), in the Paraíba Valley, São José dos Campos, SP.
The CAP Pro 50/70 R has been produced since December 2025 with renewable content in its formulation, replacing the conventional CAP 50/70, exclusively at this refinery.
The CAP Pro AP 70/85 has been produced since August 2023, with special authorization from the ANP. It can only be sold to customers who sign a consent form and subsequently report monthly on its use of CAP Pro AP 70/85.
The CAP Pro W 30/45 R has been produced since January 2024, back when it was CAP Pro W 30/45 without renewable content. Petrobras is evaluating market acceptance of the new products and studying other hubs to supply them, aiming to increase availability without compromising the delivery of other conventional CAPs.
CAP Pro AP 70/85 has been tested with various types of polymers and proven compatible with all of them. However, it is recommended that each distributor verify their formulations prior to use.
Compatibility is not expected to differ from other CAPs produced by Petrobras, even though this product facilitates industrialization.
The 1.0% value is in line with North American and some European specifications. Additionally, CAP Pro AP 70/85 contains rejuvenating components that may have slightly higher volatility, without compromising product performance.
CAP Pro W 30/45 R is produced with specific raw materials and process conditions, using renewable content that, alongside lower mixing temperatures, promotes greater durability for asphalt concretes, from both a cracking and rutting perspective.
Is CAP Pro W 30/45 R a direct competitor to modified asphalts? No, CAP Pro W 30/45 R does not compete with modified asphalts, emulsions, or other products formulated by distributors.
CAP Pro W 30/45 R is an asphalt cement specified exactly like the conventional CAP 30/45, specially formulated for reduced temperature applications of the WMA (warm mix asphalt) type.
Yes. CAP Pro W 30/45 R is a Scope 3 sustainable product, meaning the reduction in carbon emissions occurs across various stages of the logistics chain. Customers, asphalt plants, and other logistics chain players must certify their respective stages. Petrobras is mobilizing to provide information regarding its stage.
The differences between CAP Pro W 30/45 R and conventional CAP are the use of surfactants and renewable content in the production of sustainable asphalt. Therefore, there is a cost associated with these chemical components, which will have to be passed on to the customer over time.
By reducing mixing and on-track application temperatures by up to 40ºC, the following benefits are achieved:
a) Up to a 35% reduction in fuel consumption used to heat the asphalt mix;
b) Reduction of fumes (volatile material that vaporizes during product application), which translates to lower greenhouse gas emissions and creates better working conditions for on-track workers exposed to these vapors;
c) Better workability, meaning easier application, allowing for paving on colder days;
d) Longer transport distances for the asphalt mix (CAP + aggregate).
Yes. The use of RAP is carried out at the asphalt plant, being added to the process at a specific percentage, thus replacing parts of the virgin aggregates and asphalt. This lowers the production cost of the asphalt mix. It is worth noting that the use of RAP has become mandatory, and CAP Pro W 30/45 R facilitates mixing in these cases as well, given the temperature losses when using cold recycled material.
CAP Pro W 30/45 R can also bring some benefits to end users (drivers):
a) Reduced impacts on travel time, as the road closure time during the asphalt surfacing service is shorter, allowing for faster lane release and generating fewer operational disruptions;
b) In some cases, it provides greater comfort for the user due to the higher durability of the asphalt surface, as defects manifest more slowly, maintaining good service conditions on the road for longer periods.
CAP Pro 50/70 R and CAP Pro W 30/45 R have renewable content (a type of vegetable oil) in their formulation, allowing the use of a larger proportion of pre-salt oils in their production. This results in a product with a smaller carbon footprint compared to conventional CAPs, while maintaining quality and technical specifications.
Yes, both products fully comply with ANP specifications, guaranteeing the same performance as conventional CAPs in all applications.
CAP Pro 50/70 R and CAP Pro W 30/45 R have the same applications as conventional CAPs: highway paving, waterproofing, and industrialization of asphalt products.
These CAPs underwent rigorous testing in three stages: laboratory scale at CENPES, semi-commercial scale at NESIX, and practical application on experimental tracks at Ilha do Fundão (RJ), proving their durability and constructive aspects.
The process maintains the base of conventional CAPs while incorporating a renewable stream.
In addition to the direct reduction of emissions from the renewable content (*), CAPs with renewable content allow for the processing of a higher percentage of pre-salt oil at REVAP, which is naturally less emissive, resulting in a double environmental benefit.

These CAPs were rigorously tested in CENPES laboratories, showing excellent properties for asphalt modification, such as the production of polymer-modified asphalts and emulsions.
CAPs with renewable content meet the same ANP specifications as conventional CAPs, so they can be used as direct substitutes with no difference in paving projects.
