Our commitment

Our operations aim to generate value for the company and stakeholders, with a long-term vision and commitment to life and the environment. We aim for development that combines sustainability, innovation, and protection of the natural heritage of the regions where we operate, going beyond legal compliance. Therefore, we promote actions that respect and conserve the ecosystems where we operate, focusing on avoiding and minimizing impacts, enhancing restoration, and aiming to achieve net gains in biodiversity.

And how do we do this? By investing in technology, innovation, training, and environmental management to ensure that our activities contribute to the balance of biomes and ecosystems.

What do we do to conserve the environment?

We play a relevant role in protecting biodiversity in Brazil, a country with huge variety of species . Our actions help conserve and restore these ecosystems, as well as mitigate climate change and promote sustainability.

For us, biodiversity protection is directly related to our socio-environmental responsibility. This means acting ethically and consciously, considering the impacts our activities may cause to the environment and the people who depend on it.

Our commitments to care for Brazilian biodiversity

Check out some of our commitments, defined in our Strategic Plan.

* Biodiversity Action Plans (PABs) aim to implement initiatives to conserve or improve biodiversity, identifying priorities and tangible and measurable actions.

Our contributions to preventing the extinction of endangered species

Did you know that in 2021 the Ministry of Environment listed more than 1,400 Brazilian fauna species as endangered with extinction? We are contributing to reducing this number. This is the case for the humpback whale (Megaptera novaeangliae) and the black-browed albatross (Thalassarche melanophris), two species monitored and protected by projects we support, which had been listed as “Vulnerable” to extinction since 2003 — both were removed from the list in 2014 and now have the status of “near endangered”

Our biodiversity actions englobe voluntary projects and initiatives associated with environmental licensing, as well as research, development, and innovation projects.

How to produce energy and also care for nature

We believe that with energy innovation, it is possible to reconcile operational excellence with respect for nature. We act responsibly in oil and gas exploration, adopting cutting-edge technologies to reduce emissions and protect biodiversity. With environmental commitment and a long-term vision, we transform challenges into opportunities to achieve a just energy transition for all.

See some of our initiatives:

Decarbonization solutions and other energy sources

Pre-salt oil emits 70% less pollutant gases than the global average.
  • Refinery adaptation to produce fuels with lower carbon content.
  • Development of renewable energy sources in Brazil.
  • Investment in carbon capture technologies.
  • Acquisition of high-quality carbon credits with environmental and social benefits.
  • Reforestation of Brazilian areas through carbon credits

Frequently Asked Questions

We help conserve biodiversity through voluntary projects developed throughout Brazil, with initiatives associated with environmental licensing and research, development, and innovation projects.

With Biodiversity Action Plans (PABs) in all our operations, we design and implement initiatives to conserve ecosystems, protect species, and restore degraded areas.
For more information: Sustainability Report

We invest in several environmental projects across all Brazilian biomes through the Petrobras Social & Environmental Program. The supported sustainable initiatives are selected based on two lines of action: Ocean and Forests.

Achieve biodiversity gains by 2030, focusing on forests and oceans. To this end, the following targets were established in the ESG Commitment of our 2050 Strategic Plan and 2025-2029 Business Plan:

  •    100% of our facilities with Biodiversity Action Plans (PAB) by 2025.
  •     Positive net impact on areas by 2030.
  •     Increase efforts in biodiversity conservation by 30%.
  •     Protect at least 73 threatened fauna species.
  •     Restore and conserve at least 228,000 hectares of biomes.
  •     Strengthen management of at least 33 million hectares of environmental protection areas.

Some initiatives: Regional Characterization of Sedimentary Basins, Beach Monitoring, Cetacean Monitoring, Marine Biota Monitoring, Monitoring of Mammals, Turtles and Marine Birds, Monitoring of Platform and Vessel Impacts on Avifauna, Mapping of Sea Turtle Nesting Sites, Avifauna Census, Monitoring of Water Quality, Sediments and Associated Biota, Mapping of Mangrove Vegetation and Degraded Areas, Mapping and Quantification of Carbon Stock in Mangroves, Socioeconomic Characterization of Traditional Communities, Environmental Education Project for Workers, and Submarine Acoustic Landscape Monitoring.

While we help preserve Brazilian biodiversity, we also invest in oil exploration and production with lower carbon emissions to ensure the country's energy security and enable a just energy transition.

The truth is that, despite decreasing, global oil demand in the coming decades remains essential in all scenarios foreseen by the Paris Agreement. Therefore, we take on the challenge of replenishing oil reserves and reducing our emissions.
