Technologies developed for the fair energy transition

Our CO2 capture, use and geological storage (CCUS) program in the pre-salt fields is already the largest in the world, in terms of volume reinjected annually.
Have you ever imagined an oil production platform powered solely by electricity, which reduces greenhouse gas emissions by 20%? This project is very close to becoming a reality at Petrobras.
Our unique HISEP technology will separate CO2-rich gas from oil still on the seabed and reinject it into the reservoir. The Mero 3 Field, in the Libra block, located in the pre-salt of the Campos Basin, will be the first to use the technology.
Our closed flare technology increases gas utilization in a safe and sustainable way and prevents it from being released into the atmosphere. Its use is aligned with the World Bank’s Zero Routine Flaring by 2030 initiative, defined as one of our six Sustainability Commitments.

We are pioneers in the development of technology for the production of diesel oil with renewable content and we are going to implement the first unit in Brazil entirely dedicated to the production of aviation biokerosene (BioQAV).

In 2022, biofuels already accounted for 23% of energy demand in the national transportation sector — the only country in the world to surpass the 10% mark! And with our Investments in low-carbon and carbon-neutral products, this number is only set to increase.

Voluntary contributions

Petrobras’ voluntary initiatives offset GHG emissions with carbon credits, reinforcing its commitment to decarbonization.
Improving our products, modernizing our facilities, and preserving ecosystems: all of this is environmental responsibility. In our activities, we seek to act with guiding principles of ethical and transparent behavior.

We seek to rationalize water use, such as reuse and elimination of losses. We work towards a circular economy, with reuse and recycling of waste, and we promote actions to conserve and restore biodiversity. We also improve process safety and response to environmental emergencies.

In simple terms, energy transition é is the gradual shift from non-renewable energy sources — such as petroleum-based fossil fuels — to more sustainable alternatives.

This also involves decarbonization of operations, reducing greenhouse gas emissions.
A fair energy transition needs to consider sustainability, equality and inclusion above all. In other words: the focus is on migrating to cleaner energy, but without leaving anyone behind, neither workers nor consumers.
An energy transition that “leaves no one behind” is one that provides affordable energy while ensuring access to quality jobs and fostering local entrepreneurship.
Energy transition is important to ensure the energy the world needs in a more sustainable way, reducing damage to the environment. In practice, this happens when we look for ways to generate and offer this energy with lower greenhouse gas emissions, such as biofuels, wind and solar energy.
The first step towards an energy transition é is the gradual increase in energy production from renewable sources, such as wind, solar and biofuels. This will make it possible to produce electricity at a lower cost, which will be crucial for reducing oil consumption.
Despite decreasing, oil and gas production will still be necessary to guarantee the energy security of Brazil and the world in the coming decades.

Therefore, Petrobras is taking on the challenge of replenishing reserves and producing oil, while reducing greenhouse gas emissions and developing more sustainable products.
There are multiple options for decarbonization routes that reduce greenhouse gas emissions. They include:
  • The adoption of new technologies in the long term to restructure the existing energy systems.
  • The addition of renewable energy sources , such as hydroelectric, wind, solar and biomass.
  • Combating deforestation and fires, which are responsible for a large part of emissions in our country.
  • Support and develop environmental projects that preserve ecosystems, which, in addition to retaining the carbon present in that environment, preserve all the biodiversity that exists there.
Brazil's main challenge in the fair energy transition is to maintain — or increase — the current presence of renewable energy sources in a competitive manner.
Although demand for oil is expected to fall in the coming decades, it will continue to be present. Therefore, taking climate change and conditions into account is an ethical responsibility that is part of our policies. We work to offer solutions in new energy and decarbonization, seeking a fair energy transition, with fewer emissions and more social inclusion.
