The importance of fertilizers in food production
Our fertilizers contribute to food production. And the resumption of fertilizer production in 2026 aims to meet national demand, providing important inputs for rural producers.
The impact on agribusiness
In recent years, Brazil has imported more than 85% of the fertilizers used in the field. Our resumption in urea production, one of the main products used by agribusiness, helps reduce external dependence on this input.
Currently, our production capacity in the units in Sergipe, Bahia and Paraná already represents approximately 20% of the demand of Brazilian rural producers for soil fertilization and ruminant feed.

Furthermore, local production generates positive impacts on different fronts:
- Strengthens regional economy
- Drives social development
- Expands energy and food security
- Reduces vulnerability to geopolitical conflicts
- Increases the country's competitiveness in the global competition for inputs
Urea: one raw material, multiple applications and benefits
Fertilizer production comes from ammonia, a derivative of natural gas. It is from ammonia that we obtain urea.
Far beyond being an input for agribusiness, urea also serves several important industrial sectors such as automotive, cosmetics, resins for furniture, coatings, paints and varnishes, textiles, among others.
Brazil alone consumes approximately 8 million tons of urea per year.
Our nitrogen fertilizers
The concentrations of nitrogen (N) differentiate ammonia from urea. Both, however, are used in fertilizer production:
- Ammonia: 82% N (base for fertilizers and petrochemicals)
- Prilled urea: 46% N for agricultural use (microgranulated)
- Granular urea: 46% N and high field efficiency
- Reforce N: nutrition for ruminants
- Industrial urea: applications in textile industry, pharmaceuticals, coatings, among others
- Premium urea: base for ARLA 32
- ARLA 32: reduction of NOx emissions in diesel vehicles
Meet our nitrogen fertilizer plants
In our 2026–2030 Strategic Plan, we maintain the guidelines of the 2050 Strategic Plan, reinforcing our vision of being a diversified and integrated energy company, with value generation and a focus on sustainability. To achieve this, we combine the prominence of oil and gas with expansion into lower carbon intensity businesses for the field and various industrial sectors.
We have two active plants in the Northeast region (FAFEN Bahia and FAFEN Sergipe) and a wholly-owned subsidiary in Paraná, ANSA.
UFN-III, in Mato Grosso do Sul, is scheduled for delivery in 2029. It is located close to the largest consumer markets for these products, the states of Mato Grosso, Mato Grosso do Sul, Goiás, Paraná and São Paulo.

UFN-III

FAFEN-BA - Bahia Nitrogen Fertilizer Plant
- Opening: 1978
- Objective: To meet national demand for fertilizers, reducing import dependency.
- Location: Camaçari Petrochemical Hub, Bahia.
- Processes: Integrated production of ammonia and urea, with auxiliary units for utilities and effluent treatment. Ammonia production is carried out from natural gas.

FAFEN-SE - Sergipe Nitrogen Fertilizer Plant
- Opening: 1982
- Objective: To expand national fertilizer production, leveraging the region's natural gas.
- Location: Laranjeiras, Sergipe.
- Processes: Similar to FAFEN-BA, with integrated production and utility units. Ammonia production is carried out from natural gas.

ANSA - Araucária Nitrogenados S.A.
ANSA, Araucária Nitrogenados, is a wholly-owned subsidiary of Petrobras.
- Origin: Founded in 1983 by Ultrafértil, it was acquired by Petrobras in 2013.
- Location: Araucária, Paraná, next to the Presidente Getúlio Vargas Refinery (REPAR).
- Processes: Integrated production of ammonia and urea, with auxiliary units for utilities and effluent treatment. Ammonia production is carried out from the refinery's asphalt residue.
Strengthening the future of agribusiness in Brazil drives us forward
Our fertilizers reinforce the competitiveness of agribusiness and contribute to Brazil's food security, reducing external dependency. With investment, technology and energy integration, we continue to contribute to more diversified, efficient, safe and sustainable production.
